内容記述 | The winged figure in Durer's Melencolia is regarded as the personification of intelligence and melancholy. Meanwhile there is a figure, who poses just like her, in Durer's own woodcut; the bearded scholar sitting on the steps in Christ among the Doctors from the cycle Life of the Virgin. Besides, the compositions of the both works are somehow alike. Along with the said figures, similarly shaped objects are arranged similarly, such as the steps, young Jesus and the winged infant, the arch and the rainbow, the garland and the dragon respectively. As the woodcut had been already widespread, Durer would have borrowed its composition to bring the episode of young Jesus into Melencolia as the fundamental concept. The carpenter's tools then remind the viewers of Joseph, who is working in The Holy Family in Egypt from the same cycle. As many patriotic works were produced in Nuremberg around 1500, Durer also would have executed an engraving to praise the excellence of Germany using the episode as a metaphor. The astronomer Regiomontanus (Muller), who is alluded to by the infant on the millstone, was most appropriate to the subject. Moreover, Durer would have visualized the dedication of Regiomontanus' newlyfound writing by carpenter's tools. | |||||
