Although some ten thousand convicted felons were sent to these islands from mainland Japan in the period of the Edo Era, the realities of the exiles have been hidden behind the thick curtain of secrecy. It appears that many historical documents were set on fire by Satsuma during the chaotic period after the Meiji Restoration.
